It's a Crying Shame

Unless you live under a rock, you have probably heard about Harrison Butker’s commencement address at Benedictine College and the Progressive demands that he be “cancelled” and his supposedly inflammatory remarks repudiated. After all, Harrison, a devout Catholic, had the audacity to tell a group of graduating seniors at a Catholic college that traditional family values were right and abortion and sexual perversion were wrong. “How dare he?” the liberals screamed in unison as their neck veins bulged and spittle flew from their lips.

While the Progressives were getting their panties in a twist over his speech – which elicited a standing ovation from the audience – Butker’s jersey was flying off the shelves at NFL.com… much to their chagrin. In fact, the Kansas City Chiefs placekicker’s jersey is now as popular as that of quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce (better known as Taylor Swift’s boyfriend).

Speaking of Mahomes, he is a professing Christian who credits God for his talent and has appeared on the cover of numerous Christian sports publications. And so, when his friend and teammate Harrison Butker was under fire for his pro-faith remarks, you would expect Mahomes to rush to his defense, right?

Wrong! Instead of offering a full-throated defense of not only Butker but also the content of his speech, all Mahomes could muster was a weak and mealy-mouthed “it’s a free country and he can say whatever he wants” reply to reporters’ questions. Thanks for nothing, Patrick!

Here’s a direct quote from Mahomes that, at least in my opinion, is downright shameful…

“There’s certain things that he said I don’t necessarily agree with, but I understand the person that he is, and he’s trying to do whatever he can to lead people in the right direction. And that might not be the same values I have, but at the same time, I’m going to judge him by the character that he shows every single day, and that’s a great person.”

In other words, you’re pretty much on your own, Harrison, because I don’t want to risk upsetting pro-choice feminists and transgender season ticketholders.

Meanwhile, Coach Andy Reid, who is a practicing Mormon, echoed the same pathetic and politically correct party line. "I don't think he was thinking ill of women,” he said of Butker’s remarks, “but he has his opinions and we all respect that.”

As sports commentator Ben Axelrod put it, “Reid’s comments fell right in line with Kansas City’s apparent playbook for the situation, in which both he and superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes defended Butker’s right to express his beliefs without supporting or condemning them.”

I guess neither Mahomes nor Reid is familiar with Christ’s words in Revelation 3:15-16…

“I know your deeds; you are neither cold nor hot. How I wish you were one or the other! So because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to vomit you out of My mouth!”

Both Mahomes and Reid have incredible clout, not only within the Chiefs organization but throughout the National Football League. They could have… and should have… defended Butker loudly and proudly. After all, what are the Chiefs (whose owner is also a Christian) going to do? Trade their three-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback or fire their Hall of Fame head coach?

Apparently, in today’s woke NFL, it’s easier to throw someone under the team bus than to stand side-by-side with him in the trenches. And that, sports fans and fellow Christians, is a crying shame.
