America Is on a Suicide Watch – Part One

On January 27, 1838, a tall and gangly 28-year-old lawyer from Springfield, Illinois gave a speech to the Young Men’s Lyceum in his adopted hometown. Titled, "The Perpetuation of Our Political Institutions,” it included the following memorable – and very prophetic – passage…

“Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer. If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time or die by suicide.”

Fast forward 185 years and Abraham Lincoln’s words offer an eerily accurate description of the United States of America in 2023.

Yes, Russia has invaded both Crimea and Ukraine in recent years, but its armies have yet to threaten let alone breach the continental U.S. And whereas The People’s Republic of China is poised to invade and annex neighboring Taiwan, its warships are not blockading American ports and its fighter jets are not encircling our skies overhead.

No, just like Lincoln warned, America’s current decline – and eventual demise – is the direct result of an internal death wish.

There can be no other explanation for why we have opened our borders to millions of illegal aliens, including thousands of known criminals and suspected terrorists. Nor can a rational person explain to me why, with the richest coal deposits in the world and enough petroleum and natural gas reserves to fuel America for hundreds of years, we are trying our best to phase them out in favor of buying oil at exorbitant prices from our enemies and relying on third-world energy sources such as wind and solar power.

Let’s scrap Henry Ford’s internal combustion engine that helped build the middle class and force everyone to buy an electric car with a radioactive lithium battery mined by children in Afghanistan and manufactured by slave laborers in Red China. Yeah, that makes lots of sense!

So, what’s the answer?

First, we need to stop electing people who hate America and are hell-bent on transforming it into a socialist state or a communist dictatorship. They are the ones enacting these ludicrous laws and establishing these preposterous policies… all to our detriment as a nation.

Second, we need more people with private sector experience in Congress, not career politicians who have only signed the back of a paycheck and never the front.

Third, we need to buy into the concept of American exceptionalism trumpeted by virtually every Republican president since Lincoln… and opposed by virtually every Democratic president since Carter.

I have a fourth step that we must take as a country to reverse the downward death spiral we are currently in, but you will have to wait until tomorrow to read about it. Stay tuned!
